Escaped slave, James Thomas, listed in the church documents as the son of Isaac Thomas and Mariah Hamond, first appeared on a federal census in 1855. He and his wife Pricilla had a two-year-old son, James. By 1860, the couple had added four more children to their household, Lucinda, George, Demont and Culbert. By 1865 a new baby was listed, Tillman. Culbert, however, was no longer listed, indicating he was most likely deceased. The family appeared in 1870 with James listed as a farm laborer. James's eldest son was now living with another family as a laborer. By 1880, James appeared to have another wife, 68-year-old Elizabeth, both listing their place of birth as Maryland. James died on October 6, 1893 at the age of 63.
