Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild Collections
The 1903 Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony, situated in Woodstock, NY and part of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, is represented in this collection through the art work produced at the Colony, its Arts and Crafts architecture, various writings about its philosophy and impact, photographs and other material.
Founder, Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead was an Englishman inspired by the leadership and philosophy of his teacher, art critic and writer, John Ruskin, and by his friend and designer, William Morris. Byrdcliffe was an experiment in creating an intellectual and creative atmosphere, in a natural environment, with and for artists to work, teach and be inspired to produce furniture, painting, textiles, metalwork and pottery. Byrdcliffe is the reason that artists first came to Woodstock and planted the seeds that forever changed its artistic and cultural life.
Byrdcliffe's over 30 cottages, barn and Whitehead's home are listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and is still a haven for over 50 artists annually.
