DescriptionWarden Bernard Iddings Bell placed a great emphasis on athletics, and the variety of sports played, as well as the support for these teams improved greatly during his tenure. In 1922 the student publication "The Messenger" ran a brief article which stated in part: "Tennis has at last been placed on a firm basis as one of the athletic interests of St. Stephen's. For the first time a team, formally organized and approved by the athletic department, has been sent out to face victory or defeat with more than the good-wishes of the student body." In this picture taken a year later, an entire freshman team stands in the oak grove below Stone Row, near the tennis courts then located on the lawn under the trees.
