Dear Mamma,
Have been trying to find a moment to dash off a line to announce my great happiness to you. About ten days ago Betty Miller wrote to me that she had decided to marry me whenever I wanted to. As you have perhaps noticed, I have been very devoted for some five years, so that my perseverance has at last been justified. This is absolutely “entre nous” as I don't know how she feels about announcing the fact publicly, - particularly as my means, or rather Papa's, as I have wasted my time royally as far as making a living is concerned are not ample enough to undertake matrimony. Anyway, I am awfully happy + look forward to the future with the greatest joy. Betty is a perfect wonder, and am sure she really does love me. It has taken her five years to decide, so that I know how she feels pretty well. Anyway, be very discreet until I hear from Detroit. You may ask cousin Elizabeth about her. I am writing to her anyway.
Have been in superb health although it has been bitterly cold. By never wearing my muffler either at waist or throat have avoided all colds + sore throats. Am very busy so must leave.
Yrs aff.
H.M.S.
