The Acting Debut of Robert Montgomery: Where It All Began
Robert Montgomery attended Pawling School ( renamed Trinity- Pawling School in 1947) where he was known by his given name, Henry. He entered the school in September of 1919 and withdrew in June of 1921. Tragedy struck a year later when his father died, leaving the family destitute.
Robert became self- sufficient through employment in various jobs requiring manual labor before setting off to New York City to seek his fortune on Broadway. There, he landed acting jobs which brought him to the attention of the motion picture conglomerate, Metro- Goldwyn- Mayer ( MGM).
After signing a contract with MGM, Robert Montgomery moved west to Hollywood and began a long career in show business culminating with two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, one for “ Night Must Fall” ( 1937), the other for “ Here Comes Mr. Jordan” ( 1941). His career was multi- faceted and included acting, directing and producing as well as serving four terms as President of the Screen Actors Guild.
For his accomplishments in motion pictures and television, Robert Montgomery was awarded a star- plaque for each on the most famous sidewalk in the world, Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
