Description	This is a photograph of a blackboard in a classroom in Cluett Hall at Pawling School (circa 1915). Listed on the board are assignments for English and Rhetoric. Rhetoric is a course that Henry Montgomery took in his second year at Pawling School (1920-1921). See also Montgomery's student record in this exhibit. Rhetoric included work in public speaking, debate and theater and was taught by Mr. Frank Smoyer, a former instructor of Rhetoric at University of Minnesota and graduate of Yale University. It can be surmised that Mr. Smoyer was a very important influence on young Montgomery whose experiences in Rhetoric class may have given him the confidence to join the Dramatic Club and try out for the annual theatrical production.
Notes	In 1924 Henry Montgomery changed his name to Robert and went on to become one of Pawling School's most famous alumni. His career was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; the first was awarded for his accomplishments in motion pictures, the second for his work in television. Henry attended the Pawling School for two years from September of 1919 through June of 1921. Although he did not graduate from the school and subsequently moved to Hollywood, he later returned to the area and purchased a home in nearby Patterson, New York. Pawling School was renamed Trinity-Pawling School in 1947. See this exhibit's epilogue for more information about Robert Montgomery's acting career and life.
