This
is
a
hand
colored
postcard
picturing
the
Balmville
Tree
, the
oldest
Eastern
Cottonwood
on
record
in the
United
States
. A
core
sample
taken
by
Harvard
University
in
1953
indicated
that
it
started
growing
in
1699
.
It
is
situated
at the
intersection
of what were
two
Indian
trails
,
now
known
as
Balmville
Road
and
River
Road
in
Balmville
, a
hamlet
in the
Town
of
Newburgh
. The
New
York
State
Office
of
Parks
,
Recreation
and
Historic
Preservation
has
named
it
a
historic
site
and the
New
York
State
Department
of
Environmental
Conservation
has
designated
it
as a
public
historic
park
,
making
it
New
York's
smallest
at
348
square
feet
.
It
has been
listed
on the
National
Register
of
Historic
Places
since
2000
.
It
once
reached
as
high
as
110
feet
but
currently
it
is
25
feet
in
circumference
at its
base
and
83
feet
high
.
