Description
Undated
needlework
sampler
created
by
Louisa
Hasbrouck
,
constructed
when
she was a
young
girl
. The
sampler
consists
of the
alphabet
in
capital
letters
and
numerals
1
through
8
in
red
crossstitch
.
Each
line
is
separated
by
different
crossstitch
designs
in
blue
,
black
and
red
. The
last
line
has
several
8's
and
Louisa's
name
in a
double
running
stitch
.
Louisa
names
appears
again
at the
bottom
in a
similar
double
running
stitch
, with an "
L
" to the
left
in a
crossstitch
,
upright
or
oblong
crossstitch
. The
entire
sampler
,
except
where
it
is
torn
on the
bottom
, has a
black
crossstitched
border.
; A
(needlework)
sampler
is
a
piece
of
embroidery
produced
primarily
to
practice
in
working
numerals
and
alphabets
.
Other
samplers
could
include
figures
,
motifs
,
decorative
borders
and
sometimes
the
name
of the
person
who
embroidered
it
and the
date
. These
needlework's
were
never
intended
for
framing
,
rather
they were
rolled
up
and
unrolled
as a
reference
of a
pattern
or
stitch
.
Space
was
reserved
at the
bottom
by the
embroiderer
,
so
when
new
skills
or
designs
were
acquired
the
stitches
could
easily
be
added
at the
bottom
.
Linen
cloth
was
most
commonly
used
as the
backing
,
although
wool
and
cotton
was also
used
. The
samplers
were
often
embroidered
with
silk
or
linen
thread
, and
after
the
1830's
soft
Berlin
wool
yarns
were
used
. The
embroiders
were
often
girls
between
the
age
of
five
and
twelve
.
