Description
Photograph
showing
the
front
view
(west
side)
of
Locust
Lawn
(The
Josiah
Hasbrouck
House)
.
Sepia
and
white
oval
shaped
photograph
, with a
gray
and
off
white
border
.
Many
trees
and
shrubs
are
visible
in the
foreground
.
Several
of the
windows
shutters
have been
closed
, there are
chairs
on the
porch
, and the
front
door
appears
to be
open.
; This
view
is
notable
for the
vines
that have been
allowed
to
grow
up
the
tree
trunks
, a
decidedly
picturesque
treatment
. A
deck-like
porch
has
replaced
the
earlier
stoop
,
which
has
since
been
replaced
.
Note
the
shrubbery
in the
foreground
, an
indication
that the
picket
fence
enclosure
was a
garden
space
even
after
the
house
was the
residence
of
tenants
.
Locust
Lawn
(The
Josiah
Hasbrouck
House)
was
built
by
Colonel
Josiah
Hasbrouck
around
1814
. On the
death
of
Col
.
Josiah
in
1821
the
house
passed
to his
son
Levi
Hasbrouck
and his
new
wife
Hylah
Bevier
.
Levi
Hasbrouck
and
Hylah
Bevier
had
5
children
,
who
were
all
raised
in the
Locust
Lawn
house
.
After
Levi
Hasbrouck's
death
in
1861
, the
house
went
to his
only
son
Josiah
.
Josiah
passed
the
house
to his
wife
Maggie
Hasbrouck
,
who
considered
selling
the
Locust
Lawn
property
.
Fortunately
, in
1889
Laura
T
.
Hasbrouck
Varick
(1834-1925)
,
bought
her
sister-in-law
Maggie's
interest
in
Locust
Lawn
so
that the
property
would not be
sold
out
of the
family
.
Laura
in
turn
left
the
house
and
farm
(now
worked
under
tenants)
to her
nephew
Hasbrouck
Innis
(1859-1932)
whose
niece
,
Annette
Innis
Young
(1885-1975)
would
bequeath
the
property
to the
Huguenot
Historical
Society
(Historic
Huguenot
Street)
, in
1958
