Notes
Carl
Nitschke
was also
identified
in a
separate
photograph
as "
Carl
Nitskie
".
Two
sources
were
used
to
identify
individuals
in this
photograph
--
handwriting
on the
back
of the
photograph
as
well
as a
two
separate
yellow
sheets
of
paper
which
were
written
by
Barbara
Conner
. The
only
discrepancy
was the
boy
identified
above
as
Albert
Avery
was
identified
by
Barbara
Connor
as
Albert
Giardina
.
A
separate
typewritten
document
references
the
history
of the
Tomkins
Cove
School
building
which
was
later
the
building
for the
Tomkins
Cove
Public
Library
. The
document
reads
, "
Before
this
building
was
erected
school
was
held
in a
small
wooden
building
which
was
only
open
for a
brief
period
each
year
.
It
housed
75
children
. This
building
was
built
as a
school
(School
District
#5
,
Stony
Point)
in
1874
for
$22,000.00
by
Calvin
Tomkins
.
It
contained
6
classrooms
each
large
enough
to
hold
40
children
-
only
2
rooms
were
actually
required
so
one
room
was
used
as a
public
library
. At
one
time
the
school
went
from
1st
grade
through
12th
.
Mr
.
Tomkins
presented
it
to the
town
with the
stipulation
that
it
would
revert
to the
Tomkins
family
if
it
was
no
longer
used
as a
school
. If
you
look
carefully
at the
front
of the
building
you
can
see
his
name
and the
date
at the
top
of the
building
. This
building
was
used
as
school
until
1957
at
which
time
a
new
building
was
erected
on
Buckberg
Road
. The
residents
of
Tomkins
Cove
voted
in
1962
to
form
a
special
library
district
and
support
it
with
tax
money
. The
Tomkins
family
deeded
the
building
and
land
to the
library
district
and
today
the
building
is
the
Tomkins
Cove
Public
Library
".
