John Wynkoop was born June 27, 1827, seven days short of July 4th, the day all slaves in New York were freed. According to the Gradual Manumission Law of 1799, John could have been held in servitude until he was 21. His mother's master was Derek Wynkoop, the largest slave holder in New Paltz, NY.
