Historic Huguenot Street owns 11 coverlets produced at the Libertyville Woolen Mill. Little documentation exists on the business beyond local tradition stating that Jacob Lowe (b. 1786) and his brother Samuel (b. 1789) were in partnership with Solomon DuBois in running the mill which specialized in figured and fancy coverlets. The mill was located approximately three miles south of New Paltz on the Wallkill River. The New York Census, Ulster Co., Libertyville for 1850 lists Jacob Lowe as a weaver. Dinah Roosa (1822-1896) married Hiram Deyo in 1846. Therefore, this coverlet was most likely made before her marriage.
The works in this exhibition are on display from October 16-December 12, 2010 and January 26-March 18, 2011 at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at the SUNY New Paltz, 1 Hawk Drive, New Paltz, NY. For hours and information visit http://www.newpaltz.edu/museum/.
