In 1900, Christopher Freer was living in the Elting house on Huguenot Street (today the Bevier-Elting House) where this photograph was taken. Freer is listed in the Federal Census for 1870 as a blacksmith, in 1880 as a farm laborer, and in 1910 as a carpet weaver. The circumstances surrounding his training or his output as a weaver are unknown but most probably he like many other weavers worked at a variety of occupations in order to make a living.
