Description
Greene
County
,
New
York
is
on the
west
side
of the
Hudson
River
,
south
of
Albany
County
and
North
of
Ulster
County
. This
is
an
overview
map
depicting
the
Towns
,
Hamlets
and
Villages
of
Greene
County
with
streams
and
some
natural
features
located
. There
is
a
table
"
Table
of
Air
Line
Distances
",
giving
distances
between
the
towns
and
villages
.
Town Description
Greene
County
was
formed
from
parts
of
Albany
and
Ulster
on
March
25
,
1800
, and
named
for
General
Nathaniel
Greene
, of the
Revolutionary
war
.
Parts
were
annexed
to
Ulster
County
on
May
26
,
1812
. The
county
,
686
square
miles
,
is
located
on the
west
bank
of the
Hudson
River
,
thirty-two
miles
south
of
Albany
. The
main
range
of the
Catskill
Mountains
(3,000
-
3,800
feet
above
sea
level)
begins
eight
to
ten
miles
west
of the
Hudson
and
extends
along
the
southern
border
of the
County
to
Delaware
County
. A
branch
from the
main
ridge
extends
in a
north
westerly
direction
through
the
County
,
separating
the
towns
of
Durham
and
Cairo
from
Windham
and
Hunter
and
dividing
the
County
into
two
nearly
equal
parts
.
Another
branch
from the
main
ridge
extends
northward
through
the
exteme
western
part
of the
County
,
between
the
towns
of
Halcott
and
Lexington
,
forming
a
series
of
highlands
that
rise
on the
band
of the
Schoharie
Creek
. This
range
forms
the
watershed
between
the
Schoharie
Creek
and the
Delaware
River
. The
eastern
half
of the
County
is
hilly
and
broken
, with an
irregular
line
of
bluffs
extending
along
the
Hudson
River
.
Parallel
to the
bluffs
,
two
to
four
miles
further
west
,
is
a
range
of
hills
500
to
700
feet
above
the
river
. At the
Town
of
Athens
these
hills
are
known
as the
Potick
Hills
.
Between
this
ridge
and the
eastern
edge
of the
Catskill
Mountains
the
surface
,
moderately
hilly
,
slopes
toward
the
Catskill
Creek
. The
principal
streams
are the
Hudson
River
,
forming
the
eastern
border
; The
Schoharie
Creek
and its
tributaries
,
draining
the
western
slope
of the
mountains
; and, the
Catskill
Creek
with
it’s
principal
tributary
, the
Kaaterskil
,
draining
the
eastern
slopes
.
(The
Catskill
Creek
was
named
by the
Dutch
from
wild
cats
found
in this
vicinity
.
Kaaters
Kil
has a
similar
signification
, but
is
limited
to the
male
animals.)
Small
branches
of these
streams
flow
through
rocky
ravines
which
form
passes
locally
known
as
“cloves”
. The
principal
of these are the
Kaaters
Kil
,
opening
westward
from the
Hudson
into the
valley
of the
Schoharie
Creek
; and the
Bushkil
Clove
,
Stoney
Clove
,
Mink
Hollow
, and
Plattekil
Hollow
,
opening
southward
from
Schoharie
Creek
into the
valleys
of
Ulster
county
. The
small
streams
that
drain
the
western
slope
of the
range
in
Halcott
form
branches
of the
Delaware
.
Schoharie
Creek
rises
in the
town
of
Hunter
,
within
twelve
miles
of the
Hudson
, and
flows
west
and
north
to
form
a
branch
of the
Mohawk
River
.
Few
or
no
metallic
or
valuable
minerals
,
except
building
and
flagging
stone
, are
found
in the
County
. The
whole
region
is
best
adapted
to
grazing
; and the
principal
agricultural
exports
are
butter
,
cheese
, and
pressed
hay
.
Oats
,
barley
, and
potatoes
are
extensively
cultivated
, but
insufficient
grain
is
grown
for
local
consumption
. The
principal
manufactured
products
are
brick
,
leather
, and
paper
.
Bricks
are
extensively
made
on the
banks
of the
Hudson
River
, in
Catskill
,
Athens
, and
Coxsackie
.
Before
the
Erie
Canal
was
completed
,
Catskill
, the
County
seat
,
commanded
the
trade
of the
adjacent
counties
west
and
south
through
to
Lake
Erie
, and
some
portions
of
Northern
Pennsylvania
.
It
was a
large
wheat
market
; and at the
Catskill
Creek
Falls
,
three
miles
west
of the
Village
of
Catskill
, were the
most
extensive
flouring
mills
in
New
York
State
. With the
advent
of the
canals
and
railroads
commercial
transactions
of the
County
are
limited
to
home
trade
. A
similar
change
took
place
in the
mountain
towns
.
About
1817
, on the
discovery
of
improved
methods
of
tanning
leather
,
tanners
moved
into the
Catskill
Mountains
,
purchased
large
tracts
of
lands
covered
with
hemlock
, and
built
extensive
tanneries
. The
valleys
of
Schoharie
Creek
,
Batavia
, and
West
Kils
“soon
teemed
with a
numerous
,
active
laboring
population
, and the
solitude
of the
deep
mountain
glens
was
made
vocal
by the
hum
of
industry
, the
buzz
of the
waterwheel
, and the
rattling
of
machinery
.
Villages
of
considerable
magnitude
, with
churches
,
schools
,
stores
, and
taverns
,
rose
up
in the
wilderness
as if by
magic
.
Thirty
years
ago
Greene
Co
.
made
more
leather
than
all
the
State
beside
. The
supply
of
bark
in this
region
was
soon
exhausted
, and the
proprietors
gradually
abandoned
their
establishments
and
followed
the
mountain
chain
s.
,
erecting
new
factories
in
Ulster
and
Sullivan
cos.
; and their
successors
are
now
pursuing
the
hemlock
into the
heart
of the
Alleganies
. The
result
of
all
this was to
facilitate
the
occupation
of the
lands
in the
mountain
towns
, and in
many
cases
to
carry
cultivation
to the
summits
of the
most
lofty
ranges
,
thereby
opening
one
of the
fines
dairy
and
wool
growing
regions
in the
state.”
(p.330)
Catskill
,
located
on the
Hudson
River
,
is
the
County
seat
. The
first
courthouse
was a
wooden
building
.
After
that
building
burned
a
new
,
brick
courthouse
was
built
. A
stone
jail
was
built
in
1804
, and a
fireproof
clerk’s
office
in
1812
. The
County
poorhouse
is
located
on a
farm
of
130
acres
in the
Cairo
,
ten
miles
west
of
Catskill
. The
farm
yields
revenue
of
$900
.
It
averaged
130
inmates
,
supported
at a
weekly
expense
of
$0.75
each
.
School
is
taught
in the
house
most
of the
year
.
“The
condition
and
adaptation
of the
building
, and the
management
of the
inmates
, are not
thought
creditable
to the
co
.
authorities.”
(p
.

Six
weekly
newspapers
are
published
in the
County
