Notes	'During the last hundred years, this house has served as a gas station, a general store, a guard house, and a post office. In 1777, a Tory courier, Lt. Daniel Taylor carrying a message from British General Sir Henry Clinton to General John Burgoyne in Saratoga, came upon a group from American General George Clinton's army who were dressed in stolen British uniforms. He swallowed the metal ball containing the message but was forced to cough it up under the threat of disembowelment. He would soon be tried and sentenced to death. He traveled with Clinton's army to Hurley, where they established a military outpost. The prisoners were jailed in the basement of the Dumond house, and it became known as the "guard house." A few days after his arrival,, Taylor was escorted down present day Schoolhouse Lane and hanged on a sweet apple tree.
