Description
Emily
Olssen
Bleeker
lived
at in
Cedar
Hill
Cottage
as a
child
when
her
father
, the
Rev
.
William
Whittingham
Olssen
taught
at
St
.
Stephen's
in the
late
19th
.
century
. Her
recently
published
memoir
'A
New
York
Lady
'
includes
a
passage
about
living
in
Cedar
Hill
Cottage
in the
1870s
: "A
funny
little
house
it
was; not
un
picturesque
outside
; but
terribly
cramped
and
inconvenient
my
mother
must
have
found
it...Mr
.
Bard
had
built
it
originally
, for his
laborers
; a
two
family
house
built
long
and
low
;
each
with its
own
doorway
,
stairs
and
chimney
two
rooms
downstairs
; on
each
side
of the
little
hallway
,
two
up
. The
ceilings
were
so
low
that
Uncle
Pierre
could
put
his
hand
on them. The
windows
were
latticed
casements
, and there were
two
dormers
in the
roof
in
front
,
opening
into the
upper
halls
,
two
in the
back
which
opened
into the
middle
bedrooms
; and
two
windows
in the
gables
,
which
lighted
the
end
rooms
.
You
will
perceive
that
no
bedroom
had
more
than
one
window
,
which
I
suppose
was
considered
sufficient
for
poor
folks...The
outlook
from the
front
of the
house
was by
no
means
interesting
,
consisting
principally
of
some
old
barns
; but at the
back
there was a
pretty
view
over
fields
,
creek
and
woods
, with a
glimpse
of
Roundtop
peeping
between
the
trees
where
they
fell
away
a
little
from the
mouth
of the
creek
. This was the
view
I
had from
my
bedroom
window
;
though
to
enjoy
it
I
had to
perch
on the
broad
arm
of an
old
wooden
chair.
