Description	Director William Henry Matthews, left, with son Bruce Matthews. An Episcopal priest by training, William Matthews instead served people through social work and political advocacy. He was friends with William Ward of Ward Baking Company and in 1926, he inspired Ward to donate the money necessary to open Ward Manor as an institution charged with meeting the needs of the elderly and the poor. William Matthews was also the Director of the Association for the Improvement of the Condition of the Poor, or AICP, the organization that administered Ward Manor until its merger with the Community Service Society. William Matthews served as the Director of Ward Manor, overseeing the camps and the home for the elderly until his death in 1946.
