Steamer Washington Irving at Sunflower Dock, Sleightsburgh, Rondout Creek. During World War I steamers over wintered upriver to protect steamers from damage from sooty soft coal burned in New York City. Soft coal was burned during World War I to save the cleaner burning hard coal for the military.
