In this project, the World War I materials at Wilderstein, home of the Suckley family, focus on the activities of Henry Eglinton Montgomery Suckley (HEMS). He was a member of the American Ambulance Field Service that supported the French Army before the United States became a participant in the war. The materials and HEMS's experiences represent, as well, the involvement of many men and women from Hudson River Valley families.
The letters, diaries, photographs, maps, magazines, printed materials, and postcards record a personal journey but represent the experiences, thoughts and concerns of American volunteers, civilians and soldiers during the period 1915 - 1917. These records provide a first hand account of the war to end all wars.
