Cantata: "Le Berger fid&le" (The Faithful
Shepherd) Jean-Philippe Rameau
(1683-1764)
R6citatif: About to see his love sacrificed, faithful Mirtil laments. He
sighs, he moans ceaselessly, and to Echo, his voice expresses
his sorrows thus:
Airplaintif (Mirtil): Must Amarillis perish? Diane wishes to calm her
own anger. Can you break our gentle vows of love by this
horrible sacrifice? If her shy innocence must die on your
altar, Gods, what is the reward that virtue can hope for?
R6citatif (Mirtil): I must not allow myself to be carried away by my
misery. Another must die for her! Let us hasten to help her.
A lover will die to save his love.
