Built
in
1886
by
Bruce
Price
.
Designed
by
Bruce
Price
as a
summer
cottage
in
1886
, this
once
acclaimed
house
has been
severely
altered
.
It
was
first
published
in the
periodical
Building
V
,
Sept
.
18
,
1866
, as a
pondering
by
Fred
Wright
.
Frank
Lloyd's
own
house
in
Oakland
Park
,
1889
,
bears
a
remarkable
resemblance
.
It
is
a
close
adaptation
of
plan
,
elevation
and
facade
(see
Scully
,
Graybill
and
Hitchcock
below)
. A
photograph
was also
published
in
Architecture
I
,
May
1900
. "The
house
has been
considerably
remodelled
with
extensive
additions
in the
rear
and a
polygonal
two-story
porch
at
one
corner
. The
two-story
extension
addition
on the
roadside
is
later
and
covers
the
first
story
bay
windows
on the
side...The
house
has been
repainted
to
emphasize
the
distinctness
of the
various
materials...
" and
resembles
a
Swiss
chalet
. An
irony
, in that
it
was
originally
intended
as a
statement
away
from the
picturesque
toward
a
more
ordered
symmetry
. This
house
was
moved
(1890-1894)
by its
owner
, "
capitalist
"
Winthrop
Chanler
. The
various
transactions
for this
house
and its
history
remain
somewhat
obscure
. The
first
owner
, in
1888
,
appears
to have been
Charles
Coolidge
Pomeroy
, a
prominent
New
York
City
businessman
.
It
was
sold
to
Winthrop
Chanler
in
1891
and was
probably
moved
at that
time
to
make
room
for the
Coster
estate
(designed
by
William
Bates
;
current
owner
:
Mrs
.
Maude
Coster
French)
.
Several
transactions
ensue
(Chanler
left
the
Park
in
1902)
, the
most
notable
being
Georgie
C
.
Piorde
,
half-brother
to the
Duke
of
Windsor
.
