property
from the
Tuxedo
Park
Association
. The
house
,
designed
by
Bruce
Price
and
much
acclaimed
by
architects
and
critics
, was
called
Chastellux
after
the
Marquis
de
Chastellux
, an
aide
to
General
Washington
,
who
, the
legend
goes
,
very
much
admired
the
vista
from that
particular
spot
. The
Marquis
was on his
way
from
New
York
to the
Battle
of
Princeton
. In
1916
, the
estate
was
sold
to
Ruth
Hill
Beard
who
became
Ruth
Hill
Lorillard
(married
to
Squire
Lorillard
,
son
or
Pierre
,
founder
of
Tuxedo
Park)
and
later
Ruth
Hill
Heidsieck
.
Chastellux
was
torn
down
at her
request
and this '
chateau
'
built
in its
stead
.
Heidsieck
,
accompanied
by his
wife
,
left
the
Park
in
1942
and the
property
was
assumed
by the
Sisters
of
Charity
of
St
.
Vincent
of
De
Paul
. The
chapel
which
adjoins
the
house
was
converted
two
years
ago
into a
stable
and
court
tennis
room
.
