| Description | Lithographic process, on the front is a young girl wearing a green coat with brown velvet trimming and a brown hat. She is surrounded by snow, enclosed in a circle with the text "New Year". Behind the circle is a busy background featuring plant patterns, a sun and moon with a message that reads "Wish You A Happy New Year." along the top "Sun comes Moon comes Time slips away". The publishers mark is along the bottom "L. Prang & Co. Boston". The interior is a calendar with a poem on the left hand side, the text is green and flowers surround. The backside has an image of an old man wearing a light brown hat and coat. He has a long white beard and is surrounded by snow, enclosed in a circle with a message that reads "Old Year". Around the circle, there is a similar background to the front. The message reads, "A Calendar For The New Year" and "Sun sets moon sets The Year's Grown gray" and again the publishers mark is along the bottom. |

Louis Prang, (1824-1909) was born in Breslau, Prussia. His father, Jonas Louis Prang, was French Huguenot and his mother was of German descent. Prang came to the United States in 1850 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts, after spending many years traveling and learning about printing and textiles. Prang promoted the greeting card movement in America in 1856. By 1875, Prang opened a lithography shop in Boston. Prang has been acknowledged as being ""The Father of the American Christmas Card"". He developed chromolithography and in 1874 created and published the first Christmas cards produced in America. John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892, was born in Massachussetts to John and Abigail (Hussey) Whittier. Whittier attended school at the Haverhill Academy, where he was introduced to poetry, in particular a Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier became known as an American Quaker Poet, his first publication was in 1826 and he continued to write and publish until his death.
