| Description | Rectangular shaped lithograph card with red background and a central image of children dancing. The children are in gray and white, a border surrounds them of green holly. At the bottom of the card is a message that reads "A Happy Season! Merrily, merrily, to and fro, Under the holly and mistletoe, Tripping it lightly, we come and go, While music sounds, and our spirits flow, Our hearts a-tune, and our cheeks aglow, With mirth which CHRISTMAS alone can show. Dear, dear old CHRISTMAS! come ever so!". The back side has a message written in blank in that reads "Aunt Ann with a M errie Christmas from Laura 1879". |
| Notes | Louis Prang, (1824-1909) was born in Breslau, Prussia. His father, Jonas Louis Prang, was French Huguenot and him mother was of German descent. Prang came to the United States in 1850 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts, after spending many years traveling and learning about printing and textiles. Prang promoted the greeting card movement in America in 1856. By 1875, Prang opened a lithography shop in Boston. Prang has been acknowledged as being "The Father of American Christmas card". He developed chromolithography and in 1874 create and publish the first Christmas Cards produced in America. Prang arranged an annual competition for designs, which was exhibited at the American Art Galleries, New York City. Ann Bevier Hasbrouck, referred to as "Aunt Ann", the second daughter of Levi and Hylah Bevier Hasbrouck, was born in May 11, 1827. In 1855, Ann Bevier Hasbrouck married George Innis of Poughkeepsie, New York. Ann Bevier died in 1906 at the age of 79. Laura Maria Hasbrouck was the daughter of Sarah Maria (1823-1858) and Louis Hasbrouck (1814-1880). The couple lived in Ogdensburg, New York where they raised their three children. Levi was born April 3, 1851, and married Helen Franchot Miller. Laura Maria was born August 10, 1857. Laura never married and died c. 1934. Laura Maria was the daughter of Sarah Maria Hasbrouck, who is the sister of Ann Bevier Hasbrouck, making Ann, Laura's "Aunt Ann" as referred to in this card. |
