Due to the difficult nature of Thitchener's writing,

Orleans Virginia, November 8, 1862
Dear Friend Phill,
This afternoon I take
the pleasure to write to you again and I am
glad to think that I am able. I am well, only
my feet is very sore and we have been on the
march for three weeks. I have been played
out three or four times but have to go
dead or alive over mountains and hills,
through swamps wet or dry, day and night
half froze. We have had a hard snow storm
last night and it was unpleasant for us
to travel or in camps we had to camp in
one night right down in the snow.
We was so tired we could sleep any-
where till we got cold. Sometimes,
it don’t make any difference where we sleep.
We have drove the rebels some
time and we keep driving them
till we are coming where they are.
Thicker and faster, they keep
about three miles ahead of us.

| Description | James writes to his friend Phil about the difficulties of army life. He has been marching for three weeks straight though serious weather conditions. One night the troops had to camp right down in the snow. He mentions that there are strong Union forces at Winchester, where they expect to be in a few days. He mentions a small clash between his regiment and the rebels and does not believe they stand a fair fight until they can get their forces together. James tells Phil about the scarcity of food, and having to steal food from the rebels. He expresses a need to get back the railroad, so supplies can get through. James is tormented by the sight of so many of his comrades in the hospital, He writes, "fifteen of our boys lay in the hospital just like hogs[.] it tis so bad to see them". He predicts that half of his comrades will die before spring. He closes remarking that he has not seen the inside of a house since he enlisted. |
