May our commencement be in the name of God
May all who are concerned be notified that today on the fourteenth of November of the year 1730, I, the undersigned, Jean Thevenin, inhabitant of New Paltz, in the county of Veltre, in the province of New York, in America, feeling of sound mind, blessed be God, given that death is uncertain and that God has kept away from us it’s hour and moment which he reserves to himself and to his holy Providence, I have wished before my death to put all my business in order. That is why I have wished to declare my last will and testament in the following manner and shape, and thus he also gave me through the grace of his Holy Spirit his knowledge so that I may be instructed in his church, having withdrawn me from the idolatry in which I was born to lead me into the light of his truth, having given me the grace of receiving the holy sacraments, and, therefore, I thank God, my creator, and Jesus Christ, my savior, and the Holy Ghost, who consoles and sanctifies us, and leave my body to the earth from which it was formed until it pleases God in his eternal wisdom some day to resurrect our body to reunite it with our soul so that we may all together forever enjoy everlasting life, and I am happy that Jesus Christ was made one of us, Lord, through his blood and the promise he made to all those who are faithful to him until death.
