Springtown Jan 21st- 64
Dear sister Rachel,
This is a beautiful
morning & it seems to have put me in the
mood to write. We rose this morning
about a quarter past five o’clock and it
had a good effect upon us all except
Ellen who was rather sulky before
day-light but is getting in better humor
now. Lib. Elting is here and we have
been having pretty good times this week.
To day we expect Lib. & Bell which I
suppose will not spoil the fun.
Tuesday afternoon we visited at Uncle
Clinton’s & yesterday Father Jacob & Mother
were here with Aunt Sarah &
Aunt Jane. Now I suppose you will
say that our time has been pretty well
occupied this week thus far so I will
[Page 4]
She was with them at Phil Elting’s
saturday night as is fat as she can be
I believe that I have told you all
that will be interesting and as Lib is
waiting for me to stop writing so as to
commence our work I will close for the
present this letter asking you to answer
as soon as possible and accept the love
of your sister

| Title | 1864-01-21, Letter from Maria Eltinge to her sister Rachel Eltinge |
| Creator | Eltinge, Maria |

| Description | This letter to Rachel is from her sister Maria who lives across the river from New Paltz, in the village of Springtown. She supplies Rachel with a long list of friends and relatives who have been visiting back and forth with each other, and goes on to tell her about other social activities that have been planned, including a “soldier’s party.” She tells Rachel that their mother was not happy about Rachel’s decision to cut short her schooling, but has now accepted it. Finally she informs Rachel about a controversy brewing locally concerning the $325 substitution payment to avoid the draft. |
| Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
