Miss Rachel Eltinge
My Dear Daughter.
I was very much
mortified at the thought of having forgotten
to put my Buffalo Robe in the Mail Sleigh
for your comfort as I promised. I saw the
driver in the evening & he said he
had a robe in the Sleigh & you got through
quite comfortably. You did well to go when
you did, as the weather has been much
colder since, & you were there for school on
Wednesday morning free from the excitement
attending a hurried trip through the cold.
I find you forgot to take your bottle of
medicated wine with you. Dr. Gerow has
prepared something for you to take & we
will send those with clothing & c. the first
opportunity. I saw Sarah Wedne Tuesday
evening & she said they would go to Po'keepsie
shortly. Elizabeth is better. At the time you left
I feared she was in a critical condition, but

| Description | Rachel’s father opens his letter to her, the first after a long Christmas holiday, apologizing for having forgotten to put a warm buffalo robe in the mail sleigh that she took back to Poughkeepsie from New Paltz. He worries that she left a bottle of medicated wine behind, but says he will send it. He goes on to say that she will be having a visit from her sister Sarah. And, while the Christmas season is over, there are still many parties and visits to report on among friends, family and neighbors. He also tells her about some dealings concerning the rental of a property and, finally, hopes she won’t have a problem getting back to her studies. |
| Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
