Po'keepsie Jan 12th/64
My Dear Father,
Ruly has just been
here, and brought me a bill, which
was missent [sic]. Sent to Roelif Eltinge
Po'keepsie instead of Roelif Eltinge
New Paltz. I suppose Ruly thought he had
not pocket money enough to pay
that little sum. It is not as much
as Mary Romers, which amounts to
more than one hundred dollars. I
did not know before tonight how
much I was paying for board.
I really think it is too much. Some
times, I think perhaps I had bet-
ter stop going to school at the end
of this term, and would ask to do
so if it was not for my music.
As you know, I have finished
alger arithmetic, and will finish

| Description | Rachel writes to her father discussing the actions of her cousin "Ruly" or Roelif who has been visiting. She informs her father that a bill for her tuition was sent to the wrong place but after reading the bill she is appalled at the price. She thinks that the price of board is too high and she would ask to withdraw if it was not for her music. She discusses classes she has completed and classes she is considering taking to make staying for the music worth it. |
| Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
