Po’keepsie. Dec 10th
Dear Father.
I had nearly
concluded not to write
until I had received a letter
from home. ”for you must
know I have had none since
I have been back.” but then
I thought perhaps you were
as anxious to hear from me
as I am to hear from you.
To be sure Mother was here
saturday. but I saw her such
a short time that I did
not hear any thing. about
home. My dress and so forth

so long. Roelif has not been
to see me since I have been
back. He is not as attentive
as he was at first. I suppose
Mother & Lib reached home safely
saturday. They are quite good
teamsters. I guess Lib will
have a gentle horse when she
is married so that when Martin
H. is busy she can ride up to
our house and make my dresses.
Father, I hope you will excuse
this short letter as I have no
time to write a longer one. If
I get one from home I will
write again the last of this
week or first of next.
Write soon if you have not
written already, or if you have
Your Loving Daughter
Rachel.

| Title | 1863-12-10, Letter from Rachel Eltinge to her father Roelif Eltinge |
| Creator | Eltinge, Rachel |
| Date.Original | 1863-12-10 |

| Description | Rachel writes to her father thinking that he would be anxious to hear from her. She discusses a dress her mother delivered and the possibility of ice-skating but says she does not want to try it for fear of neglecting her studies by skating too much. She complains that people have been less attentive in visiting and writing than at first and closes the letter with hopes to receive a letter from her father soon. |
| Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
