Miss Rachel Eltinge
Dear Daughter,
I am at home this evening
for the first time since yesterday morning. Mother
& I went to Sol Lefever’s Yesterday Morning
& after dinner I took Sol’s horse & wagon to the
Paltz & back. Mother expects to come home
tomorrow & Lizabeth Lefever with her.
Elizabeth Lefever came Sol’s yesterday from
Uncle Derick’s. She told me to keep my
good clothes ready for the weding [sic] at Edmun [sic]!,
but, have not yet had any such intimation
from head quarters. I have not yet learned
of the arrival of the bride groom expectant, and
of course untill [sic] that event things will remain
in Status quo. Peter Eltinge was expected
home last Saturday, but he writes that
he has orders to join his Regiment & is
probably now on the Ocean on his way
to New Orleans. Robert Woolsey & wife

of little Maggie & Sarah I understood
were not ready. There will be no service
in our Church next Sabbath.
We have heard nothing more of
Mary Dubois; but presume she will
be here on Saturday as was expected.
I saw her riding about the Village
on horseback yesterday or today
I write with the same old rusty
pen I complained of last week
Write when you have leisure
My pen has given out.
It is always a pleasure to hear
from you & to know you are
well & that your new associations
are pleasant. good Night
Yours truly
Now my lamp is burned out

I’ve yours this morning;
I think you have sufficient exercise
without Gymnastics. The vocal
music would be well enough if there was a prospect of great im
prove ment [sic] of which I would like to pretty well satisfied on
that point before recommendig [sic] it. I should like very much
that you should be able to sing well.
(on the top on page 1)
If you should get an invitation the wedding you may
get the consent of Mr. Wright & I will come after you
It is important that you should conform to
the regulations of the Institution where
possible & then return their confidence etc.

| Description | This is a very chatty letter to Rachel from her father. Friends and family visited each other regularly and often stayed overnight or for a few days. Since he has just returned home from such a visit, he reports the latest news about social events and local comings and goings, including the return of a young man to his regiment. He apologizes to Rachel because she was scolded for leaving school for the weekend without letting the headmaster know; he says he will take the blame for rushing her off so they would not miss the boat. He also fusses about some “technological” problems such as his rusty pen, and the lamp that burned out before he could finish his letter. He completed it the next morning, responding to questions she raised about taking gymnastics—no! she gets enough exercise, and vocal lessons—perhaps, if they think she has some talent worth cultivating. |
| Notes | Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) was the husband of Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875) and father of Rachel Eltinge (1847-1921). Roelif's correspondence with Rachel and family photographs can be seen in the "School Letter of Rachel Eltinge" exhibit. |
