Po’keepsie Oct 20, / 63
Dear Father, & Mother.
.I am all alone in my
room. Nearly all the girls have gone
to the concert. I received a letter from
Sarah last night, and the carpet
bag, accompanied by the letter, this
morning. I found the paper, knife
and tongues all right; the other
things are too, I suppose. but I
have not yet had time to open
them; We had two study hours
immediately after walking, this
after-noon, instead of after supper
so that the girls, could go to the
concert; but. I. thought I would
take the concert-time to write
home. I did not know that Mr.

again. ____ Father is there any
man by the name of Young, and ___h
who does not live with his wife and
has his business done at the Hugue-
not Bank, if you know him, you
know a man who stole a little girl
from his wife and run off with ___
her. Her friends supposed he had
put her in some school. they traced
her until as far as Po’keepsie and
came here to see if she was in this
school. I suppose Mr. Wright
told them there was a girl in the
school from the paltz, So they
wanted to see me, and wanted to
know, if I knew any of the Hasbroucks
in the Paltz. It seems her Mother
is some related_ to George Freers
wife. I believe they were going on to
the Paltz to see about it. Did you hear
anything of them? I wrote a letter
to Maria Sunday. and scolded a little
because she did not write. but – I suppose
she has had no time if her girl is
sick. Now if I was home I might
go and help her. Did you get a letter
from me monday. I sent one monday
morning. I am sorry you find
mistakes in my letters. I am glad
you find them, but sorry there are
any to find, rather. but you know
I often write in such a hurry that
I dont [sic] have time to read them over
before I send them. I will try and
(on the top of page 1)
do better in future. Write often.
please.

| Description | Letter from Rachel to her parents acknowledging receipt of some things from home. She worries about how they will resolve their dispute, and confirms to her father that Mr. Wright might be in need of money at the moment as he’s just had a major expense; he bought a pony for his daughter. Rachel says that since Mr. Wright refers to all of the girls as his daughters, perhaps they all might enjoy the new pony? She asks her father if he knows about a scandal involving someone who stole his daughter when he left his wife. There were inquiries about the girl at her school which involved her, since she was from “the Paltz.” |
| Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
