[Page 1] Po’keepsie Oct 13th /63
Dear Father.
I am sitting in my room,
just returned from walking and it
is also just candle light, and we star-
ted shortly after three oclock. but we
have not been walking all this time
some of the girls, got lost in the woods,
and a number of us were obliged to
stand and wait until they were found
because we were afraid [sic] of a scolding if
we went home without a teacher. My
lessons all very came out very well
monday as we did not get quite
through one of them when the bell
struck, then of course the rest went
with to-day’s lesson and another
the class had to take over, but another
time I will try not forget my books,
and that will make them come

| Title | 1863-10-13 Letter from Rachel Eltinge to her father Roelif |
| Creator | Eltinge, Rachel |
| Date.Original | 1863-10-13 |

| Description | Rachel writes to her father first mentioning a walk in the woods. She complains that several girls got lost and everyone had to wait for them so not to get in trouble. She continues to talk about her lessons and trying to work on them, still annoyed at the "hub bub" the girls make with their chatter. She asks for a few things from home from her mother and if they (her father and mother) could consider paying for gymnastic lessons. She closes the letter asking for a decision on her lessons and news about an upcoming wedding. |
| Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
