Dear Sister
Having a few spare moments
this recess. I will employ them in
commencing to answer your letter,
or rather, to write to you, for I seen
you sunday [sic]. I arrived here safely
monday [sic] morning, and in time
to get my lessons. I am feeling very well,
and looking forward to the time
when four weeks shall have passed.
Last night we had a surprise
party, here for Mr Wright. Day before
yesterday some of the girls came
[Page 4]
hope you will answer it, and
tell me all the news. Tell Lib I
would like to see a letter from her
and hear from that part of the
country once in a while. I think
it would be a good plan for you
and Lib to send Maggie and
Katie to Fathers [sic] to keep them
company and it would do
no harm to go often yourselves.
I must close my letter for it is nearly tea
time. Please excuse blots and writing
Remember me to all inquiring
friends.
From your affectionate
sister Rachel.

| Description | Rachel responds to a letter from her oldest sister, Sarah, although she saw her when she was home for the weekend. | Notes | Rachel Eltinge, born April 8, 1847, was one of the six children of Roelif Eltinge (1809-1884) and Blandina LeFevre (1812-1875). Rachel attended the Poughkeepsie Female Academy and went on to marry Solomon DuBois (1839-1924) on November 11, 1875. The couple had four children. Solomon DuBois was known for his fruit farms in Modena and New Paltz, and for raising Holstein-Fresian cattle that he acquired from Holland. These letters are part of the Solomon DuBois and Rachel Eltinge Family Papers (1812-1944). |
