Valentine greetings have been a tradition since the 1400s. Valentines, especially in England, were given in place of valentine gifts. Valentines were usually made out of paper. By the early 1800's Valentines were manufactured by machines. Paper lace was introduced in the mid 1800's, but real lace and ribbon was often used.
