1861-11-23 letter from Meeker Griffin to his mother and father

              Washington    Nov 23d, 1861

                                 Kalorama Heights

       Dear Father & Mother    I take this opportunity
to inform you I am well and Hope Hope [repeated word]
this will find you in good Health[.]   I have
Received no letter yet from you[.]  We have
Removed within 1/2 mile from Washington
& have very good quarters[.]   we had an acdident[sic]
in our camp by ________ running one of Col H.
by the name of Starr [Eli Starr][.]  While taking his gun
from the stack it was discharged accidentaly[sic][,]
the Ball Passing through his arm in two
places[,]  his arm being bent at the time
a man belonging to Co H Died about the
same time[.] he was Buried with Military
Honors  the whole regiment attending his funeral.
When my money gets home let Simon
Dubois have $5.00 of it. tell Mr. Dewitt
to let you have What things you want as                                                                                                                                                 cheap as you can get them. I like it here[.]
Will & you hurry & write as soon as you 
can & let me know how the folks are[.]
       I dont know how soon we will leave
       here[.] we may stay some time yet
       if nothing happens you will see me
       home before  to long not until the war
       is ended[,] that will not be long[.] I will 
       have to close it is getting Dark[.]
