Tiddboll US Govt House Hospital
Winchester Va Oct 29/1864
My Dear Mother:
I know that you have been suffering
more in mind for the last week than I have been
suffering in body. So I will be writing to give you
my present condition.
You are anxious to have me home so that
you can see just how bad I am & that you
could take care of me.
Those who were but slightly wounded & could
get off of the field themselves got a good way the
start to me in getting home They were half
way home before I got to the Hospital.
However I do not think my wounds are much
of any worse because I lay all night
They dress wounds with cold water only
mine are running & look exceedingly well
Nov 1st Wounds still easy & running
well I am week &helpless, but think
I will gain again shortly
I was payed off a few days & have plenty of
money now!

| Title | 1864-10-29 Letter from Johannes Lefevre to his mother, Elizabeth Lefevre |
| Creator | Lefevre, Johannes |
| Date.Original | 1864-10-29 |
| Description | Johannes writes to his mother describing his wounds and how he is feeling currently. He knows how anxious she has been about his condition and laments that she has "been suffering more in mind for the last week than I have been suffering in body". Johannes believes he will get better shortly because his wounds have been running well and he has done nothing more than lay and rest on his back, which is he starting to get exceedingly tired of. Besides that, he is kept quite comfortable and is able to ask for things within reason from the Chaplains. |
| Notes | Eldest son of Josiah P. Lefevre, Johannes, was born on May 26, 1837, and attended the academies at New Paltz Academy and Claverack, and Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., where he graduated in the Scientific field in 1860 and Civil Engineering in 1861. During the Civil War, Johannes helped to organize, and later joined the Company E. of the 156th Regiment of N.Y. Volunteers for whom he served as Second and later First Lieutenant in 1862, and First Lieutenant of the 156th N. Y. Regiment of Infantry in October, 1863. He also held the positions of Regimental Quartermaster, Quartermaster of the Pioneer Corps under Gen. Banks and served as Civil Engineer at Camp Bisland, Port Hudson joined Sheridan's Army of the Shenandoah, and fought in the battle of Winchester. On October 18, 1864, Johannes received the commission of Captain of the N. Y. 156th Regiment and the next day commanded his troops in the battle of Cedar Creek, where he was fatally wounded. Captain Johannes LeFevre died three weeks later at Tidball Hospital in Winchester, Virginia. His body is buried in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery. |
