Camp of the 156th Regt NYV
Harrisonburg Va. Sept 26/64
My Dear Father:
The last week has
been such an eventful one to
me that I hardly know how
to begin to chronical[sic] it.
Suffice it to say that I have
passed through it all untouched
Just ^about one week ago this very
hour (9, 30 cb. cll.) we formed line
of battle under cover of some
hills two miles east of Winchester
Our Brigade was in the front line
of the disposition of the other
troops I know very little
doubtless you have already
seen full account in the papers.
At a few minutes past ten
order for an advance was given
We ascended the hill at quicktime

| Description | Johannes writes this letter to his father fully describing the Battle of Winchester which occurred a week prior. Johannes feels lucky to have come out of this battle untouched since his company had suffered many casualties. He describes that he will never forget the “lion courage” of the officers and men in his regiment. His regiment was forced to lie down to refill their muskets because they were being hit with such heavy shell and canister that to stand up was “certain death”. Finally, after loosing many men, his regiment rallied for the third time and charged under fire from the Rebs. When more union cavalry charged the battle was won and the rebels defeated. |
| Notes | Eldest son of Josiah P. Lefevre, Johannes, was born on May 26, 1837, and attended the academies at New Paltz Academy and Claverack, and Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., where he graduated in the Scientific field in 1860 and Civil Engineering in 1861. During the Civil War, Johannes helped to organize, and later joined the Company E. of the 156th Regiment of N.Y. Volunteers for whom he served as Second and later First Lieutenant in 1862, and First Lieutenant of the 156th N. Y. Regiment of Infantry in October, 1863. He also held the positions of Regimental Quartermaster, Quartermaster of the Pioneer Corps under Gen. Banks and served as Civil Engineer at Camp Bisland, Port Hudson joined Sheridan's Army of the Shenandoah, and fought in the battle of Winchester. On October 18, 1864, Johannes received the commission of Captain of the N. Y. 156th Regiment and the next day commanded his troops in the battle of Cedar Creek, where he was fatally wounded. Captain Johannes LeFevre died three weeks later at Tidball Hospital in Winchester, Virginia. His body is buried in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
