Friday Morning
[Winter 1848 before January]
Dearest Sister
I have just finished my morning
work such as making bed cleaning lamp &c though
in addition to these I have been boiling a dish of supp__
& also a bowl of pap which I have just finished eating
& it has had the desired effect so that I feel relieved
& quite well. My health has more comfortable
since I last wrote the cold weather was very
grateful I walked every day that was pleasant
one day called at Mr Lions & Drs next day
at Mrs Terwilligars since then it has been
raining so that my exercise is confined to
the house which I endeavour to make as nice
as possible. the Dr was in to see me one
day this week he said I must take all the excercize
I possibly could I went to church last Sabba[th]
& shall continue when the weather is pleasant
& I can ware (sic) my cloak & feel well enough
to enjoy the servise (sic) I have as yet felt better there
than when I stayed at home, in the affternoon (sic)
of last Sabbath, my head troubled me than it
had in some time I have since talked to the
Dr about it, he thinks it is a nervous affection
the same as the soreness in my limbs that which I
spoke to you about he has prepared a linament (sic)
for one & an ointment for the other made of the

| Description | Leah is near the end of her pregnancy. The Dr. has given her an ointment of Belladonna to calm her nerves. He also recommends walking. "I am trying to do all I can in way of dieting to avoid bleeding." The Dr. feels bleeding may be necessary at the time of labor to relax her system. She also remarks that she is happy that young Nathaniel reads her letters and is sleeping with his siblings in the dark. |
