High Falls N.Y,
Sept. 15, 1918
Dearest Mother, brother & sister,-
Well quite a change has taken
place since I wrote last. Yester-
day I was transfered [sic] to what
they call Shaft #5, it is quite
a large brick building erected
right over the pipe line, I suppose
it contains some pretty delicate
machinery, just think of it, the
pipe is 7 ½ft x 14 ½ & tunneled
through solid rock 700 ft below the
surface of the ground, right where
I’m writing to you now, (Hows that).
I was the only one transfered [sic].
There is 5 of us here now and
I tell you it’s just like heaven,
beside what it was up at Camp
Peak where I came from. We live
in a little house about four rods
from the shaft and it is just
