To meet these losses an assessment is required on all notes in force January 25, 1850,
No. 2596 to January 25, 1855, No. 3885 of one-tenth per cent. On all notes from March 18, 1850, No. 2629 to March 18, 1855, No. 3910, three-tenths of one per cent. On all notes from April 10, 1851, No. 2970, to April 10, 1856, No. 4326, eight-tenths of one per cent.
The Directors think they consult the wishes and interest of the Association in making assessments before large sums have accumulated, involving the necessity of borrowing money and paying interest, which would very soon overbalance the expense of collecting by issuing Circulars as they have lately practiced.
The necessary notice has been published, and the time of payment fixed on the first of July 1856, and at the end of thirty days therefrom the Directors are at liberty to prosecute and recover the whole of the premium notes of those who are delinquent after that date and retaining the balance to meet any further assessments arising from the continuance of the policy, returning the surplus (if any) after that . period. The Directors truSt that they may not be driven to that resort, for those who are unfortunate in losing their property by fire have a right to expect, and must not be disappointed in receiving, their money, which lies in the pockets of the more fortunate members of the association until called for.
Enclose the money in bills or certificate of deposit payable to the order of the Treasurer, on good banks in this or adjoining counties; or the certificate of a Postmaster that the money has been mailed, or the receipt of the Agent named in this Circular. Send the number of the policy upon which payments are made. Post Office stamps are a good remittance for change. By enclosing one post office stamp with the money or proper remittance and this circular, a receipt for the money paid will be returned.
The assessment upon your Policy No. 2827 is $0.90
The assessment upon your Policy No. 4213 is $1.80
The assessment upon your Policy No. .....is $2.70
If any former assessment herewith noted, has been paid to any Agent, please forward to me a copy of the receipt.
H. W. ELLIOTT, Secretary and Treasurer.
