I hereby bargin Covenant and agree with my Negro Man named John to set him free and Manumit him two years sooner then the time which was promised him by his former Master Mr. Joseph Drake or Joseph D. Smith as specified by a written article now in the hands of John Springstead on condition that he the said John Shall conduct demean and behave himself faithfully obediently and orderly both at home and abroad to me and mine or he ought to do and also to all others for the fulfilment of the above bargin and Covenant thereby bind myself my Executors and Administrators witness my hand and seal the 30th day of May 1815

| Notes | The clause in this agreement concerning John's future behavior was probably do to the fact that under New York's Act for the gradual abolition of Slavery, March 29, 1799" a slave could not be freed by his master without the determination from the Overseers of the Poor that the freed slave would not become a burden upon the township. |
