| Title | Daniel Crommelin sells Gray Court Plantation with Negroes and stock of cattle of every sort |
| Date.Original | 1720-10-20 |
| Description |
This document inscribed with a quill pen on parchment, records the sale of the 3066 acre Gray Court Plantation with certain personal property included in the sale. An attached paper memorandum of the chattels referred to in the primary document, that is to say, it is a list of the slaves and stock sold with the Gray Court Farm. The subject document is an original copy made for the attorney at the time of the transaction and signed by owner Daniel Crommelin at that time. Preliminary research indicates that this is the only extant record of the enslavement of Native Americans (Indians) in Orange County. |
| Notes |
Daniel Crommelin's Gray Court Plantation occupied a large portion of what is now known as the Towns of Blooming Grove, Chester and Goshen in Orange County. The Mansion house mentioned in this document still stands and currently occupied by Mark Roe of Roe's Orchard. |
